Biological Radio #20

Infinite Plastic Internal - Lexingtonian Transmissions

Fire music lives! Infinite Plastic Internal is the solo moniker of Bay Area percussionist Mark Pino, who, alongside fellow Renaissance freak Brian Lucas (whose painting graces the cover on this here album), creates joyful noise with free-rockers Mountain vs. Building and the most excellent Cloud Shepherd. Lexingtonian Transmissions is the follow-up to his recent self-released 7" and it is a revelatory stew of free-jazz percussion, alien electronics, and poetry. Musicians of India speak of pouring oneself into the sound, and Pino certainly exemplifies that here, navigating the terrain with the subtlety of the most devout traveler and the bombast of a well-seasoned punk. Outstanding.

Biological Radio #19

Eyes Like Helicopter - The Shift Of It All

Scarred land bleeding sulphur into water. The dulled hues of a derelict boomtown eyed through the hazy lens of a broken bottle kaleidoscope. Iron detritus littering the landscape; ghosts of a lifestyle long-obsolete clinging nostalgically for dear life. The arms of a mighty river where love and despair have learned to coexist. There is a reverence understood by those who have tried to look away only to find themselves looking back, for between the wells the sun still rises and the birds still sing. Darren Myers' (Natura Nasa, In The Belly Of The Whale) debut release as Eyes Like Helicopter perfectly captures that reverence. Shambolic, somber, but never dark, this is a rustbelt narrative told piecemeal through silver strings and damaged electronics with the occasional distant vocal line seeping through the gauze.

Biological Radio #18

Great Blue Heron - Goodnight Ghosts

Every so often an artist comes along who can hone their honesty into a point of light so blinding you become too mesmerized to look away. Pittsburgh's Ian Bonnet is one such raw nerve. Were it not for the overwhelming fragility and tenderness, this album may leave you feeling half-feral, like a wounded animal licking its paws on the edge of a glade. Having first come to prominence in Natura Nasa and more recently known for his ecstatic bass playing in Dire Wolves, Goodnight Ghosts, Bonnet's first outing as Great Blue Heron since his 2009 self-released cd-r, finds him singing a very personal set of songs about love and loss that are as crestfallen as they are heartbreakingly beautiful. Highly recommended.
